Work outward from the sink

The manual starts with the household drain: clear a clogged sink drain or garbage disposal. If those run freely, detach the dishwasher drain hose where it joins the sink or disposal and look for grease at its end. Where an air gap is fitted, it can clog too.

Then the dishwasher’s own drain path

With the dishwasher unplugged, follow the drain hose from the drain pump to the sink connection and clear whatever blocks it. Still nothing? Look into the sump and the drain pump for clogs, then check that the drain pump’s wiring connections are tight.

What a technician checks

Resistance readings on the drain pump motor and on its wires to the electronic control board decide between a failed pump, a wire break and a control board that is not sending current.
