During a self-clean cycle, the range has noticed that the oven door is open, and F096 is the result. Applies to Elite slide-in electric ranges numbered 790.5256, 790.4255 and 790.4131 together with Kenmore 790 freestanding ranges.
Start with the door
Confirm that the door shuts all the way and presses the door switch plunger in. If it does not, adjust the door hinges, or replace them when damaged.
Then the switch and wiring
Next comes a continuity test of the door switch, with the plunger pressed and the range’s power disconnected; that test is for a technician, and a failed switch is replaced. A good switch leads to the wiring between the door switch and the relay control board, where loose wires are reconnected and a damaged harness replaced. If all that is sound, the relay control board is replaced.
