Error code F1
Appliance Range
Quick answer

The meaning of F1 changes between Kenmore 721, 362, 790 and 665 ranges. Check your series, then try the manual's reset.

Model compatibility

Kenmore reuses codes across series and model years, so F1 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

F1 means a defective upper oven temperature sensor, oven temperature sensor or control board failure, or a defective electronic control, depending on the series.

Check your series first

Kenmore range What F1 indicates
Elite electric, 721-prefix Defective upper oven temperature sensor
Elite double-oven gas, 721-prefix Defective upper oven temperature sensor
362 freestanding Defective electronic control board
790-prefix self-cleaning or manual-cleaning freestanding Oven temperature sensor failure or failed electronic oven control board
665 model (F-code/E-code pairs) Defective electronic oven control

Steps from the manual

  1. Switch off power to the range by unplugging it.
  2. Wait before restoring power: 3 minutes on a 362 model, 30 seconds on a 790-prefix range.
  3. Plug the range back in and see whether F1 shows again.

A code that returns means the part is at fault. For the 362 that is the electronic control board. For the 790 ranges, a technician narrows it down by testing the sensor circuit at the control board and at the sensor, then the wire harness, then the board. For the Elite 721 ranges, a technician measures the upper oven sensor and replaces it if the reading is off.

Codes people confuse with F1

Compare with F18 (lower oven sensor), F17 (control board failure) and F19 (lower oven not heating).
