Error code F31 Oven temperature sensor
Appliance Range
Quick answer

F31 on a Kenmore range points to the oven temperature sensor circuit on 790 electric, glass touch, Elite slide-in gas or dual-fuel and 2014 models.

Model compatibility

Kenmore reuses codes across series and model years, so F31 Oven temperature sensor may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

Oven temperature sensor circuit shorted or sensor failure, depending on the series.

Quick read of F31

Three groups of Kenmore ranges show F31. Two of them call it a shorted sensor circuit, and one calls it a sensor failure.

  • Shorted sensor circuit: self-cleaning electric ranges with 790 model numbers, 2004 and newer, and the 2014 self-cleaning electric range (probe circuit).
  • Sensor failure: freestanding electric ranges with a glass touch panel, and Elite slide-in gas or dual-fuel ranges, models 790.3263, 790.3264, 790.4260, 790.4261, 790.4275 and 790.4276.

Owner and technician roles

Shut off electrical power to the range, and leave testing to a technician. The 790 manual has the probe resistance checked, the sensor replaced if the reading is less than 500 ohms, the whole circuit checked otherwise, abnormal wiring repaired and the electronic oven control board replaced last. The glass touch and Elite slide-in manuals measure resistance through the sensor circuit with the range unplugged.
